Thanks for stopping in at

Allow me to introduce myself, and tell you a little bit about where we came from, and why we’re here. The “get” in comes from my name: Gregg Elliott Thorne. Since about the time we started to crawl, my brother Paul and I have been drawn to the outdoors with a passion so strong that it led us both into full time careers in the outdoor industries where we’ve spent more than 30 years – our entire professional working lives.

As young men in 1981, Paul and I launched a small business in Fridley, Minnesota called Thorne Brothers Custom Rod and Tackle Inc. What began as a small custom rod shop quickly expanded into a do-it-yourself rod building education center, with one-on-one, in-house rod building instruction as well as custom rod building. A passion for muskies led us to gradually expand our selection of hard-to-find muskie gear, and we soon became the largest musky tackle and lure building shop in the upper Midwest. Along the way, we opened the Fly Angler Fly Shop. Even as our tackle store grew, rod building and a spirit of innovation were always at the core of our business. Over the next decade Thorne Brothers Custom Rod and Tackle was at the center of innovation in rod building techniques and rod blank design. We helped pioneer modern day ice fishing by creating the first graphite ice fishing rods, and designed modern musky rod blanks and actions that changed the game forever and are still at the core of musky rod design today.

In 1993, ready for new challenges we sold our business. Paul ventured into the fishing electronics industry starting Marcum Electronics in 1998, while I joined the Cortland Line Company in sales and rod development until 2008, then I joined PRADCO Outdoor Brands, eventually becoming Lindy Legendary Tackle’s “Brand Manager”. We had a great and rewarding experience working in the outdoor sporting goods industries. But for me, a passion for rod design and rod building was always there.

As co-owner of Thorne Brothers Custom Rod & Tackle, one on my primary functions was chief rod builder and instructor. During our 13 year ownership, we built over 13,000 custom rods and instructed almost as many rod builders in our rod building shop. It was a decade-long complete and total immersion into the art, fun and science of rod building that’s hard to equal.

Now, I’m now returning to my roots – and my passion for rod building – with My goal is to create a web site dedicated to the art, fun and science of rod building.

We have no desire to make the largest or most encompassing rod building site you’ll see. That’s not the intent. Our goal instead is to offer solid information, proven techniques, and useful information and  innovation, along with rod building products that you’ll enjoy building and fishing with, and service that’s second to none.

Thanks again for stopping in. Please take a tour of We think you’ll like what you see.
